Self-Portrait is a recent work by Banana. It is both a response and an homage to Andy Warhol, who once transformed Banana into a reproducible cultural image on the cover of the Velvet Underground’s first album. Here, Banana appropriates Warhol in return, placing his face on its skin and presenting him as its own likeness. Edible, perishable, and anonymously cultivated, Banana collapses portrait, artist, signature, brand, and artwork into a single consumable object. Countering Warhol’s provocation to “Peel Slowly and See,” Banana suggests we should “Peel Slowly and Eat.”
When attached to a Banana, Self-portrait (also referred to as Banandy Warhol) is meant to be given away freely and completed through consumption. It turns a commodity into a gift and an image back into energy. It is an important work of Re-materialism, a movement that begins where postmodernism ends. After everything has become image and commodity, Re-materialism returns art to the world as something that can be used, shared, eaten, planted, repaired, worn, or inhabited. It refuses to let irony have the final word.
